Elizabeth House

Elizabeth House

Located next door in the former St. Augustine Convent, Elizabeth House provides for one year, a safe, warm, clean and loving home to women and their children while they make a transition from poverty and homelessness, violence or addiction to lives of stability and greater self-sufficiency.

Elizabeth House’s staff provides more than beds and food; they offer support, hospitality and advocacy.  The women are trained to manage their finances, and make accessible plans to bring stability into their lives and the lives of their children so that when they leave Elizabeth House, they are able to successfully care for their family.  Parishioners at St. Augustine may volunteer time at Elizabeth House in a variety of ways. Volunteers can help with homework on Monday nights, spend time in the office with organization and administration, or assist with Christmas gifts during the holiday season. You may contact Elizabeth House at (510) 658-1380 or through their website at www.oakehouse.org.

October News from EHouse:

As always, Oakland Elizabeth House is a busy place. Everybody is getting into the Halloween Spirit and talking about what they want to be for Halloween. Some children want to be Elsa from Frozen, Wonder Woman, and Spider-Man, just to name a few. We have numerous activities for the families to partake in. The first being our door decorating contest. The families are getting really into it and there is some friendly competition in the house.

This month National Charity League of Piedmont (NCL) threw a pizza party for the families! Each person got a pizza, which they personalized themselves. NCL decorated each box with hand drawn pictures. The moms and children raved about how much they enjoyed themselves and how grateful they were to have this put on for them.

Volunteers Needed

We need more volunteers to come on Monday nights from 6:30-8:30pm to watch the children, while the moms are in a meeting. On Thursday nights from 6:30-7:30pm, we need volunteers to come in a read to the children during Reading Club. Please email Casey at volunteer@oakehouse.org  if interested!

Volunteer Spotlight

This month’s volunteer spotlight is our new intern Temaja Crawford (pictured right). Elizabeth House is her field placement for the Human Service’s program at the University of Phoenix. She is our new Children Program’s Coordinator. We are very grateful to have her help and the children seem to love her!

Oakland Elizabeth House’s Greatest Need

There are some household items that we need at Oakland Elizabeth House. They include: pillows, toothbrushes, lunch boxes, and dress up clothes for the children. Also, we are in need of a van. We have done repairs on the one we have, but it is on its last leg. If anyone has these items or is willing to donate these items, please contact Casey at volunteer@oakehouse.org or Audre at audre@oakehouse.org.

We at Oakland Elizabeth House appreciate all the support that you give us. Thank you!
